2.0 Review of the Current State of the EVF

Following verbal reports from those present it was established that:-

  • The volunteers prepared to commit themselves to administering regional affairs had dwindled within the past 4 years and the EVF had failed to be a proactive organisation.
  • The U15 & U17 Regional Development Squads were established and has had considerable success in recent years through the contribution of the regional coaches and the respective school & junior club coaches.
  • The Mens’ and Womens’ Regional Leagues were run and catered for varying numbers of teams each season.
  • Veterans’ tournaments were held annually.
  • In Bedfordshire – there are no leagues and the only school playing volleyball is Redborne and there appeared to be no Bedfordshire VA.
  • In Cambridgeshire there are leagues of different strengths in the Cambridge and Peterborough areas and there is a new CVA committee in place. Cambs VC have just had another NVL team accepted for next season.
  • In Essex there are 3 divisions and 4 cup competitions, JUVO & VETVO annual outdoor tournaments, several NVL teams, committee of 3 who communicate mostly by e-mail, a website & junior hotspots at Tendring, Romford (St Edwards & Redden Court) & Chelmsford (Boswells)
  • In Hertfordshire the minutes of the 2003 AGM indicate that it has a committee running leagues and cup competitions.
  • In Norfolk the King’s Lynn volleyball activity has declined and there are no leagues at the present time. Cobras JVC is still going but in desperate need of competition. In Norwich there is now only 1 division of 4 teams and the UEA which is keen to host volleyball events in its 4 court sports hall if the demand is there.

All areas reported a dwindling number of volunteers at club and county level but that there were still volleyball enthusiasts out there in the field.

3.0 Sport England Proposals

Greg Brown, EVA Marketing Director, reported that:-

  • There was now a changing relationship between Sport England & the EVA.
  • There was now a Whole Sport Plan for the country being prepared by November and Volleyball was competing for funding as one of the development sports to increase participation.
  • The EVA had been given some funding to employ professional support to conduct an audit.
  • Indicators are that Sport England is pleased with the EVA as an organisation.
  • EVA plans involve a tiered structure in which regions are expected to play a crucial part
4.0 Future of the EVF

Following discussion it was agreed that:-

  • Having good communication, providing accurate and up-to-date information and widening the volunteer base were essential targets.
  • There should be an effective EVF web-site to act as a magnet for volleyballers within the region and others wishing to learn more and become involved. The existing website is in the links section of www.volleyball.co.uk, the Essex site.
  • There should be regional leagues for men, women and juniors – event based on a tournament format.
  • There needed to be more qualified coaches and referees.
  • The EVF should affiliate to the Federation of Eastern Sport and Ken Edwards would act as the link person.
  • The membership should be made more aware of the wider implication of Sport England proposals for sport in general.
