The following outlines cover coaching awards both general and specifically for teachers and also refereeing awards

Coaching Awards

Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) 12 hours
This course enables the candidate to assist in the introduction of volleyball as a recreational game to a group of inexperienced adults or children in a safe, controlled and enjoyable manner.

Level 1 Coaching Award – 16 hours
This is the basis introductory coaching award. A level 1 coach should be able to assist in the introduction of volleyball through a progression of small-sided games, to a group of inexperienced adults or children in a safe, controlled and enjoyable manner.

Level 2 Coaching Award – 24 hours
The level 2 award prepares the coach who has some experience of competitive volleyball to plan, organize and deliver a series of volleyball sessions in a safe and enjoyable manner to a group of adults or children. It shows how to teach and improve fundamentals, basic techniques, skills and simple tactics in preparation to playing the game. To gain the full award attendance at specified sportscoachUK workshops and a practical evaluation is required.

Level 3 Coaching Award – 32 hours
The level 3 award prepares the experienced coach to evaluate, plan, organise and deliver a programme of training sessions aimed at improving the technical and tactical performance of individual players and a team over a series of matches. To gain the full award attendance at specified sportscoachUK workshops, compilation of a coaching log and subsequent practical evaluation are required.

Beyond this are FIVB Level 1 and Level 2 awards which are longer residential courses held throughout the world and in several languages.

Teachers’ Coaching Awards

Volley Sport – 4 hours
This course is for teachers with little or no experience of volleyball working at Key Stage 1 and 2. It introduces the basic fundamentals of movement and ball skills and develops the games of 1v1 and 2v2 using a set of specially designed activity cards. Rules, equipment, and class/lesson organisation will be covered. An attendance certificate and set of activity cards will be awarded to those who complete the course.

Mini Volley – 4 hours
This course is primarily aimed at secondary teachers (Key Stage 3) or coaches who have a level 1 award or who have previously attended the Volley Sport course. It offers an opportunity to update their knowledge on improving skills and will assist those who wish to develop their mini volley (3 a-side) teams. It will provide new ideas to improve volleyball sessions. An attendance certificate will be awarded to those who complete the course.

Super Mini Volley – 4 hours
This course is primarily aimed at secondary teachers (Key Stage 4) or coaches who have a level 1 award or who have previously attended the Mini Volley course. It offers an opportunity to update their knowledge on improving skills and will assist those who wish to develop their 4 a-side teams and move them towards the ‘short court’ version of 6v6. It will provide new ideas to improve volleyball sessions. An attendance certificate will be awarded to those who complete the course.

Level 1 for teachers – 14 hours
This is the basic course for those who with to introduce and develop with beginner groups throughout the school curriculum (Key Stages 2, 3 & 4). The course is suitable for those with little or no experience of teaching or coaching volleyball and aims to develop a teacher’s knowledge and confidence through a progression of small sided games including Volley Sport (1v1 and 2v2), Mini Volley (3 a-side), and Super Mini Volley (4 a-side up to ‘short court’ 6v6). An attendance certificate will be awarded to those who complete the course.

Level 2 coaching award course – 3 days
This course is for the more experienced teachers or coaches already familiar with competitive 6 a-side volleyball who wish to focus on improving the performance of their teams. It focuses on the safe organisation of volleyball drills and practices designed to develop individual fundamentals, skills and team tactics. Refereeing Awards

Scorers Award
The aim is to provide theory and practical training in completion of the official score sheet.

Grade 4 – 8 hours
This grade is awarded to candidates who attend a 1 day course and successfully complete a theory examination on the rules of volleyball and use of the score sheet. The course comprises of both theory and practical sessions.

Grade 3 (Regional)
This is a basic grade of practical refereeing, a recommended minimum standard for officiating in regional or area leagues. To achieve Grade 3R, a candidate must be observed officiating a match. The Grade 3 award is made solely on the basis of practical refereeing.

Grade 3 (National)
Referees with experience in regional leagues can apply for upgrading to Grade 3N, the normal minimum grade for National Volleyball League appointments; practical assessment is similar to that for Grade 3R, but a higher standard is required.

Grade 2
Candidates for upgrading to Grade 2 must be registered Grade 3R referees and must demonstrate a good standard of officiating in the National Volleyball League.

Grade 1
Applications for Grade 1 are considered from any registered referee with at least two years experience as an appointed National Volleyball League referee at Grade 2 level. The candidate must be able to demonstrate competence at the highest level of officiating and must be committed to an extensive programme of National Volleyball League matches each season.

Beyond this are international refereeing levels which entitle the holders to officiate by appointment at major matches and tournaments up to and including the Olympic Games

Note also that there are separate structures for both Beach Volleyball and Sitting Volleyball, each of which have their own separate rules.
