Help for Essex Coaches

Essex needs coaches

To introduce and develop volleyball it is important that Essex has sufficient competent coaches. Whilst many will be happy to operate at one particular level such as introducing the game to adults or juniors, others may want to move on to higher competitive levels. Essex needs coaches at all levels.

Coaching award structure

The English Volleyball Association has a coaching award structure. Note quoted candidate fees are only one component of course costs:

Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) - 12 hours enabling the candidate to assist in the introduction of volleyball as a recreational game to a group of inexperienced adults or children in a safe, controlled and enjoyable manner. Open to all over age 16. Candidate fee £12
Level 1– 16 hours. The basic introductory coaching award. A level 1 coach should be able to assist in the introduction of volleyball through a progression of small-sided games, to a group of inexperienced adults or children in a safe, controlled and enjoyable manner. Open to all over age 16. Candidate fee £23
Level 2– 24 hours. This prepares the coach who has some experience of competitive volleyball to plan, organize and deliver a series of volleyball sessions in a safe and enjoyable manner to a group of adults or children. It shows how to teach and improve fundamentals, basic techniques, skills and simple tactics in preparation to playing the game. To gain the full award, attendance at a specified sportscoachUK workshop and a practical evaluation is required. Eligibility - at least 18, hold CSLA or level 1, 2 years experience. Candidate fee £25
Level 3 – 32 hours. This prepares the experienced coach to evaluate, plan, organise and deliver a programme of training sessions aimed at improving the technical and tactical performance of individual players and a team over a series of matches. To gain the full award attendance at three specified sportscoachUK workshops, compilation of a coaching log and subsequent practical evaluation are required. Eligibility - held level 2 for at least 1 year. Candidate fee £35.

There are separate, specific courses such as Volleysport designed for teachers.

Financial support for Essex coaches

To assist and support coaches Essex has the following policy.

  • Essex VA agrees in principle to underwrite any open level 1 or level 2 coaching course held in Essex up to a max £150.  (Note this means ALL candidates get some benefit).
  • Essex VA agrees in principle to support Essex based (through residence or activity) coaches, registered with the EVA, who attend open courses by reimbursement of either
    - reasonable travel expenses incurred.  (Note this would include sportscoachUK workshops).
    - the EVA course fee (Note this is fixed by EVA and is only one component of the course cost).
up to a maximum £40 per individual in any one year
  • Essex residents under 18 years of age as at the first day of the course will be also and in addition be eligible to apply for a £10 subsidy of fees for a level 1 course.

All such claims must be submitted within 1 month of attendance and indicate any additional subsidy that is obtained from other sources.  Whilst we are keen to support coaches, Essex VA reserves the right to reduce or withhold support where other sources of subsidy cover the same elements e.g. Eastern Volleyball Federation, English Volleyball Association or other support.

Essex will consider further support where a special case is made beforehand and financial resource permit.
