Essec Conference B 8th March 2009 Southend Meteors 0 Chelmsford 1
3 Set scores - 25-27, 24-26, 16-25 Meteors fall to Chelmsford Chelmsford first team kept up winning ways in negotiating a tricky away fixture at Southend Meteors. After two very close sets they ran out 3-0 winners after a more dominant third set to stay top of Essex Volleyballs Conference B. Anash Vora finished the match injured but picked up the Player of the match award for his earlier efforts. Chelmsford players are not fans of Sunday night fixtures but made the trip to Clements Hall with high hopes of success to keep on track for the Conference title. With Stuart Fairley away, they welcomed back Anash Vora who was to play a key role. If the starting six of Paul Bohannan (coach) and John Hill (capt) setting, Anash Vora and Steve Peacock middle and Mike Parkinson and Dave Gentry thought this was to be an easy game the home side made it clear they were up for a scrap early on. Stuart Coussins and Mark Davies combined well throughout the game and their attacking threat was never really mastered by Chelmsford during the game. The first set went tit for tat all through and only some great middle short attacks from Vora kept Chelmsford in touch mid set. But as has often been the case this season, Chelmsford toughened up their game in the closing points and took the set narrowly 27-25. Set two started with a complete mix up by Chelmsford who put in the wrong starting line up. The result was that Ken Edwards was listed on the line up and had to replace John Hill on court. As Chelmsford were 2 points up at that moment, these were forfeited. Fortunately Edwards has setting experience as was able to fill in adequately. Coach Bohannan put his hand up to apologise noting that he had written the list without putting his glasses on his team mates were not slow to make comment! This could have been a costly error as the final set score 26-24, showed again how close Meteors were to taking it. Again Vora was to the fore this time in back court cover although Peacocks serving was also a factor with an ace at set point. Set three saw Chelmsford in more control and their progress was only halted temporarily when Vora suffered a calf strain which may have been a matter of lacking match fitness. Edwards again filled in this time in his more accustomed middle hitter role and Chelmsford took the set 25-16 for a 3-0 win. Vora was pleased to be awarded the Chelmsford player of the match award saying As always in a team game everyone played their part and I was a bit surprised after having to go off injured Chelmsford teams are next in action on Thursday 12th when the first team take on closest rivals Brentwood Whackers at Mildmay Sportscentre, Anglia Ruskin University, Rivermead Campus starting at 8.30pm.
