Chelmsford send Rockets off course

Chelmsford Thirds recovered from losing the longest first set so far this year in Essex 31-33 to come back strongly taking the next three for a victory over Southend Rockets in their latest fixture. A strong showing by the women in this mixed team was crowned by the award of player of the match to Rachel Bohannan.

Chelmsford’s starting line up was Gary Mower and Richard Bohannan setting with Emily Kearney, Claudia Lambert and Rachel Bohannan joined by captain Ian Reeve in the attacking roles. The game in started with a bang as both teams served strongly, but no one at the courtside could have expected what was to follow. Chelmsford’s serving continued to be strong throughout the match and at 19-10 up coach Ken Edwards was able to bring on newcomer Anja Mayer for her first competitive game. Although she coped well under the Rocket’s serving pressure, the home side began to edge closer. Uncharacteristic errors in the Chelmsford attack squandered three set points and Southend were back in the game. There followed an intense period of play with long rallies neither side willing to chance an error. The score swung back and forth until even the scoreboard ran out of numbers as each side strove for the two point lead needed to finish. In the end a hit into rather than over the net by Chelmsford left Rockets players elated taking the set 33-31.

The next three sets were almost from a different match as Southend really beat themselves with serving errors and poor shot selection. Meanwhile on the Chelmsford side of the net Bohannan, Kearney and Lambert were all hitting well. Mayer again came on halfway through set 2 and in set four she was a starting player. Chelmsford took all three sets 25-12, 25-14, 25-22.

After the match all the players were full of praise for player of the match Rachel Bohannan who as coach Edwards said ‘must have covered every square inch of the court, sometimes it seemed in one rally’ The result leaves Chelmsford mid table in Essex Conference D. After a ladies evening at the club who train at Anglia Ruskin University the second team is back on court against Exiles on Sunday 22nd March at Riverside Centre
