Second Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix Dave Gentry, Gordon Day and Ken Edwards form Chelmsford were joined by Pete Guernari (Colchester), Tony Woods (Brentwood) plus Phil and Jessica Smith (Suffolk) as Essex Pirates for the trip to Kettering to contest the latest round of Volleyball Englands sitting volleyball competition. This competition is part of the GB teams 2012 preparations and an opportunity to directly help provide match experience to our international squads. Sitting Volleyball is the Paralympic version of the sport and is played sitting on the court. However, rather than being a disability sport it is played by all abilities and both genders on the same team except at international elite level. In a round robin format Essex won four of their nine matches with particularly
creditable performances against the top teams on the day Celtic Dragons and London Lynx
going down 25-21, and 25-22. Dragons and Lynx look destined to meet in the series final
but Essex can be happy they are not too far away. Coach Ken Edwards said afterwards
For our first competitive outing we did very well and soon adapted to the higher
standard. We still need to move around the court more but this will come. I was
particularly impressed by Jessica who played in every game and is looking to train with
the GB womens team. To see the team in action take a look at www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnAc0pkkE-E between 3.00-4.00 minutes. We are the team in the bright red stripes. If you are an existing or lapsed volleyball player or have a physical disability, you can try the sport which is played on Thursday evenings at Chelmsford Club who train at Anglia Ruskin University.
