Brentwood Whackers beat Chelmsford 2     25-18, 25-17, 25-14
Player of the match - Kamila Wawrzela

Chelmsford not up to Brentwood assault

Chelmsford 2nds travelled to Sawyers Hall College, Brentwood last Saturday meeting a powerful Brentwood Whackers side in their latest Essex Conference B encounter. They cam e away without a set against losing 25-18, 25-17, 25-14. Chelmsford’s player of the match Kamila Wawrzela recovered from a ball in the face in set two to prove she is made of stern stuff.

This match seemed destined to cause problems for Chelmsford. First they lost their usual coach when the match start time was brought forward, then the first team coach was unable to go due to a family illness and then two players pulled out, leaving a bare six to play . This left Steve Peacock to take over as player/coach with Richard Bohannan filling the captain’s role. The line up really selected itself with Peacock and Marcin Kawulksi middle attack, Kamila Wawrzela and Ian Reeve outside attack and Gary Mower sharing the setting duties with Bohannan.

For long periods of the match Chelmsford showed good resolve and competed but were let down by being unable to handle the height and power of Rees Warren who also plays in Brentwood’s National League side. This was made worse by allowing several service runs by the home team notably from Claire Sparrow leaving them always playing catch up.

One rally in the second set summed up the challenge. Unable to control the Sparrow serve, Chelmsford scrambled the ball back only to see Brentwood set up the outside high ball for Warren to hit. With the block unable to climb high enough to create a barrier, he crashed it down the line where Wawrzela was left unable to react in time meeting the ball smack in the cheek. Play was stopped whilst she recovered, which she did and continued to play well.

Peacock did look at a changed line up for set three but it would only really be shuffling without any great purpose and in fact Chelmsford did better than the score line might suggest. Wawrzela was selected by the referees for the player of the match award, having also won the accolade last time the teams met. When they do so again in Chelmsford later in the season the home side will expect to have both a bigger squad and the usual coaching team in place.

Both Chelmsford sides are in action over the next few days as the firsts travel to Tendring in Conference A. The seconds have a rematch against Southend Meteors who they defeated 3-0 in Southend a few weeks ago. This match is at Mildmay Sports centre, Anglia Ruskin University on Thursday (today) starting at 8.30pm.
