Chelmsford blow Tendring away

In one of their best performances of the season to date Chelmsford took a 3-0 victory at Tendring College to go top of Essex Conference A. Player of the match Marcin Widzinski led the way in set 1 which the visitors took 25-12 and a good all round performance saw the next two sets fall 25-21 and 25-15.

Coach Paul Bohannan had a full squad for this match which followed a very close encounter between the teams at Chelmsford at the end of last year. Chelmsford edged that by three sets to two and felt they would have their work cut out at Tendring’s home court. The starting six was Marcin Widzinski and Dave Gentry, outside attack, Steve Peacock and Anash Vora middle left Bohannan and captain John Hill with the setting duties. The early rallies were all Widzinski as time after time he blasted the ball away for the points. Chelmsford went 5-0 up and never looked back. Although Chelmsford’s first ball apart from Gentry was often short at the net, there were enough opportunities to vary the play and some fast attacks from Vora were a joy to see – back to his National league best form. Chelmsford secured the set 25-12 against a demoralised Tendring.

Bohannan brought on veteran Ken Edwards plus Laszlo Maklary and Stuart Fairly in set two and it took some time for the changes to settle in. However with Widzinski and Maklary blocking at the net Tendring found it difficult to score. Their main attacking weapon remained service and Chelmsford were never really in control of their receive during the match. However once in rallies they dominated. Tendring in this set were never out of touch and tied at 17-17 but then Chelmsford just upped a gear to take the set 25-21.

Set three was again one way traffic and at one stage Chelmsford led 14-3. Tendring did stage a recovery but it was too late and the 25-15 score line gave the visitors an earlier night than expected to travel back through the sleet. Speaking later Bohannan said ‘A good all round team performance. We were excellent in attack and although our first ball could have been better at times all nine players worked for each other and when called upon to win the points stepped up. Marcin was a deserved player of the match although he must have been tired as he had worked two shifts for First Bus earlier in the day. If he was playing in his sleep, he was still our best player.’
