The second final was Chelmsford men playing Brentwood Whackers in the Tachikara Plate final. With several players out with injury it was an easy selection choice for coach Paul Bohannan with only six players available. So Bohannan was joined by Laszlo Maklary setting, Anash Vora and Stuart Fairley were the power outside hitters and Ken Edwards and Steve Peacock played middle.

Set one is best forgotten: full of Chelmsford errors it was as if they had forgotten how to play. 25-14 Brentwood. Set two was much more competitive as Vora and Fairley found their range in attack and scored heavily. The Brentwood first ball came under pressure and they made too many attacking mistakes to recover losing it 25-19 to level the scores at one set each. Set three was all Chelmsford as from 11-10 and behind the Edwards serve, Chelmsford dominated the net to go 17-10 up. With Maklary unstoppable at the net the set was soon wrapped up 25-15. Set four was the one Chelmsford could and should have won. Continuing their momentum the only real threat was now Warren using all his top level experience to show he was the best hitter on court. However in the first two rallies Peacock and Bohannan blocked him out and Chelmsford were on their way at one stage holding a 23-14 advantage. There followed a series of silly errors tight refereeing calls and general confusion in the Chelmsford ranks. As Brentwood edged ever closer their opponents could not regain the initiative as point after point slipped away. Finally they gained serve now at set point 24-23. But they squandered this point and it was Brentwood through another crashing hit from Warren that took the set 27-25 after a marathon 25 minutes.

The deciding set was a subdued affair with neither side wanting to make mistakes. Brentwood changed end 8-6 ahead and kept pulling away winning 15-11 in the end to a tired and disappointed Chelmsford team. Speaking later coach Bohannan said ‘ We recovered well after a terrible start and really had the game in our pocket in the fourth set, but Whackers never gave up and in the end their persistence paid off. A good final.’
