Essex Womens Cup 2013 (Chelmsford)

Thursday night saw the first Essex Women’s Volleyball Open of the season run by Chelmsford VC.

Eight teams from around the county competed for three titles, Novice, Local and National. The evening began with a round robin 4v4 tournament. Southend and Chelmsford fielded teams that looked to be strong title contenders, on the other side of the scale Writtle College and Brentwood entered teams for the first time. Chelmsford played Tendring Tigers in their first game and won giving them a head start of the competition. Southend started with a 2-0 thunderous win against Ipswich Iguanas.

As the tournament progressed three teams put themselves out there as potential mentalists,  Southend, Chelmsford and Tendring. Match after match wins were clocked up for each team until Southend faced Tendring in the penultimate game. With Tendring having a 4-0 advantage in each set they were hopeful for a win. The match proved to very close with Tendring winning the first set 15-11 and the second 8-5. It was so close that at the end of the tournament Tendring were moved up from Novice to Local class.

The winners were:

Novice – Ipswich Iguanas

Local – Tendring Tigers

National – Southend

For the last hour some of the teams merged together and competed in a few 6v6 games. Due to Southend’s experience in National League they went on to win.
